Spring break is approaching at Colonie Central high school, and members of the senior class have mixed emotions about their last high school break. Many are looking forward to it, coming off of March, Colonie’s longest month with no days off. However, each student is spending their last break differently.

Colonie’s spring break this year is Friday, April 15th through the 24th, much needed break after a stressful month felt by all. Although, not all students will be using this break as a chance to relax. Many are planning on catching up on accumulating homework and some are planning to work the whole week to save up money.

Kathryn Taleporos said that she plans “...on working Monday through Friday”. When asked if she looks forward to working, Taleporos stated that she does not look forward to working everyday during break; however, she does look forward to making money for her Dunkin Donuts coffee and college.

It seems to be a theme throughout the Class of 2022 that students will mostly be doing work of some kind over break, including sports practice.

A CCHS senior, Ian Murphy, is on the boys lacrosse team this spring. He said that the team has practice everyday during spring break but Sunday. Although it goes into his vacation time, he says he is excited to practice as it “...gives him something to do. It benefits the team to practice during break.”

However, not every student is happy to give up their much needed free time.

Alex Newcomb stated she plans to spend her break catching up on homework that has been “piling up”. When asked how she feels about doing school work during break she said “Spring break is supposed to be my time, and I don’t like that school is interfering with it.”

At Colonie Central high school, students have expressed how they are unhappy with how movies and the media portrays teen spring breaks. With many depicting highschool students going on trips to the beach, driving fancy cars, and underage drinking at parties.

Newcomb says “Our (spring breaks) are so much more boring. It is very inaccurate and it makes me jealous.”

Murphy says he is “...too broke to do the stuff in the movies.”

Spring break here at CCHS is nothing like the movies, and students say they are tired of it being romanticized. The seniors have found their own ways to make it fun and a memorable last spring break.
