As of second semester, honors IDs can be used to get into the library. This system was removed for the past year due to COVID 19 restrictions.
You can access the library with an Honors ID or a pass from a teacher. If you don’t have either, the librarian will make note of it. The library expectations are to be working on a project, reading, and being quiet. The reason the library has been strict about students entering is due to COVID restrictions and ensuring students are using the library properly.
Some students say the process has been frustrating lately. They feel like the library has turned into a closed off place, and do not like having to ask teachers for passes every time.
Due to the loudness of West Wing, students prefer to go to the library instead but find it difficult to get in. They feel a lack of communication with the library and the protocol that they follow.
Jill Price, a South Colonie student said, “So I have to get a pass every single day even though I'm one of the kids who use the library for the correct reasons.”
Jada Annas, a South Colonie Student said, “You need a pass and a reason to be there and even when I had that they wouldn't let me go, I was denied the right of free prints.”
Some students have conflicting concerns over honors IDs. They feel it is an unfair concept to those who aren't allowed its privileges.
“Why do they have to use our grade from last year? It's kind of like a bummer,” said Price. “I wasn’t on the list because I had a 91.4. I'm being punished for having .1 away?”.
“It's not fair at all because you know why we don't have honors ID? Because we’re not allowed to go to the library and print things on time,” said Annas.
Mrs. Segyun, a South Colonie librarian, said it is just to keep tabs on students and where they are in the building.
The librarians are working on making things more pleasant and welcoming for students. Mrs. Segyun suggests instead having scanners around the school where you can use your school ID to keep track of students easier.
Price suggests using last semester's grades or current grades to determine who can have Honors IDS.
