Colonie Central High School’s Line n’ Cue drama club is preparing Shrek the Musical. The musical is scheduled for late March after a two year hiatus due to the pandemic.
The cast had auditions in November, and soon after began rehearsing. The cast rehearses for about two hours everyday after school. The tech crew also meets at this time.
In March 2020, Line n’ Cue was set to perform Into the Woods, but due to COVID, their production was canceled. Now, Line n’ Cue is taking the precautions to avoid any cancellations or use of understudies to perform Shrek the Musical almost exactly two years later.
Madelyn Terry (Princess Fiona) said she is very happy to be back. Her favorite part of this particular show is acting, but overall her favorite is dancing. To get into character, Terry said she keeps a notebook of what she thinks her character would do. She also said that she listens to music and meditates if she has had a stressful day.
Terry said, “Our blocking is a little bit different. We are socially distant right now during rehearsal, but during the show we will alleviate the social distancing.”
Terry said “ It is nice to be back with everybody so nobody really minds all the work.”
Tyler Vazquez (Lord Farquaad and assistant director) says their biggest struggle after the two year hiatus was learning lines. Vazquez says he also spends 10 hours a week rehearsing, usually 8 at rehearsal and 2 on his own time. Vazquez says before they get into the role of Lord Farquuad they like to play around a little bit so they are not stressed.
Vazquez said “Because I haven’t done it in so long, it is pretty difficult”
Lillian Oberg (head of the tech crew for Shrek) says they have been working on the set for a few weeks, and since the show is later than usual, they have more time. They also said since the crew has more time, they have less stress. Oberg said their favorite part of the tech crew is detailing the set and designs.
Oberg said “The tech crew works together like a family and it's great to be back.”
The show will be held at Colonie Central High on Thursday, March 24 at 7 pm, Friday, March 25 at 7 pm, and Saturday, March 26 at 2 pm and 7 pm.
