Senior Prom: A Night to Remember

High School students make so many memories and experience a vast range of things over their four years; there are a few major events that take the spotlight. One of these is Senior Prom. This year for seniors at CCHS, Prom will be held on June 7 from 6PM to 10PM at the Marriott Hotel on Wolf Road. The school assures all parents that the event will be free of drugs, vapes, and alcohol.

Students who wished to attend the event were to pick up a “Prom Promise” form at the senior office. This was then signed by themselves and their parents, agreeing to having proper conduct during the event, and upkeep the “drug and alcohol free” rule. If a student wanted to bring a guest that was not from CCHS, they would fill out yet another form.

Students were able to buy tickets online on GoFan. A single ticket cost $75, while “couple” tickets (two bought together), were $145. After purchasing a ticket, students are able to fill out a Google Form indicating the people they’d want to sit with, with a maximum of 10 people per table. Only one person is required to submit the form, and “couples” are put together by default.

Excusing the hassle of the sign-up process, the weeks leading up to prom are full of excitement, relief, and anticipation. As of the date of the event, AP Exam season would be over, as well as most finals. This means that seniors have a majority of the time leading up to Prom Night to relax, spend time with their friends and loved ones, and receive touching “promposals”. One senior who wishes to remain anonymous says that “prom season really let me [distance myself] from worrying about school.”

While the culture surrounding prom in movies prioritizes having a date or being the best dressed, Colonie’s students express the opposite opinion.

“I didn’t really stress too much about my dress since I bought it way before,” says senior Tiffany He. “As for a date, my friends and I already planned to go as a group.” Many other seniors share the same thought process, opting to go as a group rather than being self-conscious about not having a date.

Prom can be a very important milestone in one’s life, a memory that they will look back on fondly in the coming years. For those who are going, many are sure it’ll be an evening full of laughter, dancing, and companionship between those in the graduating class.

Senior Josh Espey says, “I’m pretty excited to go, especially with my girlfriend. I think we’ll have a lot of fun together, and I’m excited to see my friends there too.”

This final gathering, embellished with shining fabrics and sparkling lights, and of course food, marks the closing of one chapter at the start of a new one for most seniors as they ready themselves for adulthood – and Prom is their childhood’s swan song.

As the school year begins its sundown, prom reminds seniors that there are still fun things to look forward to, despite the senioritis, and so many more memories to make before their High School careers come to an end.
