On May 10, Colonie Central High School seniors were sent an important email regarding information about prom. While students are happy they will be getting a prom, certain COVID-19 guidelines have received some mixed reactions from seniors.

The class of 2021 advisors and executive club have done their best to plan a night with traditional prom elements, while following the current COVID- 19 restrictions in place. Because of this, the sign-up process is detailed, which is leaving some students irritable, but ultimately, it is important for the safety of everyone attending.

One of the requirements is showing proof of being fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to the event or signing up for a COVID test. The event will be one cohesive night instead of shifts, making it important to ensure we are doing the most to stop the possible spread of the virus. While it may be a bit of an inconvenience, it is much better than the alternative of getting sick, or getting someone else sick.

“I mean it’s a bit annoying,” CCHS senior Cassidy Phillips said. “But since I see my grandma twice a week, I would rather be safe than sorry.”

In doing this, students and staff attending will be preventing potential problems in people's health. Just because you feel fine, doesn’t mean you are fine. Getting a COVID test will protect others and protect yourself.

In addition, students and staff are required to wear a mask upon entry to the hotel and at all times when not seated at their assigned table While you are away from your table, you must wear your mask. When you are seated, the mask is able to come off.

“I have no problem wearing my mask when I’m not at my table. I personally wouldn’t be comfortable not wearing a mask when I would be surrounded by so many people I’m not familiar with,” CCHS senior Vincent DePalma said. “It’s nothing personal to any students, I just want to stay safe.”

It is understandable these regulations are not ideal. No one truly wants to wear a mask while on the dance floor or wants to get vaccinated or tested before going to their prom. It can be taken as another task to pile on top of one's already hectic prom schedule. However, as annoying as it may seem, it is a huge safety precaution.

Our class advisors and executive club have done their part to give us the most traditional prom possible during this pandemic. We will all be able to attend prom as a class and there will be a traditional dance floor. This being said, with such a large indoor gathering, it is crucial to make sure we follow all of the necessary procedures to ensure we keep everyone safe during the night.

“If getting tested is what I need to do to be able to go to prom with my whole class, then that’s fine with me,” Jacklyn Mantica said. “I think it will definitely be worth it in the end.”

Students need to understand this is not ideal for anyone involved, but it is what is necessary during these difficult times. While it may seem like a hassle, it should in no way interfere with you having a great prom experience.
