Mrs. Vernold is a dynamic presence in the classroom, seamlessly blending a nurturing spirit with an unwavering enthusiasm for the wonders of science.

During our initial interview, she exhibited signs of nervousness, playing with her rings, crossing her legs, and fidgeting, a tangible reminder that even the most passionate educators have their moments of vulnerability.

As the conversation unfolded, her warmth and confidence emerged like a blossoming flower and she leaned back in her chair, using her hands to emphasize her points. This transformation was not just a change in posture; it reflected the deep passion that drives her teaching and her commitment to her students.

"I remember her being so nervous during her first year of teaching. Of course, now she's not nervous at all -- quite the opposite. She's a pro!" says Michele Famoso, a colleague who has worked alongside Vernold for 22 years.

It’s clear that over time, Mrs. Vernold has grown into the kind of teacher who inspires admiration and respect.

Born into a family of educators, her father a dedicated math and chemistry teacher and her mother a passionate math and biology instructor, Vernold's path seemed almost predestined. As a child she reveled in playing teacher, inspired by the impactful educators she encountered throughout her academic journey.

Her early experiences ignited a flame that would later lead her to St. Lawrence University, where she initially pursued a history major. However, her curiosity was piqued by an astronomy class, awakening a fascination for the cosmos and urging her to delve deeper into the world of science.

With degrees in both history and science, she ultimately carved out her niche in teaching astronomy and physics, subjects that captivate her with their hands-on nature and boundless opportunities for exploration and experimentation.

Mrs. Vernold, known to some by her enchanting alter ego, the Great Vernoldini, is a true wizard of science, donning her iconic wizard hat to cast spells of curiosity and wonder across her classroom. With every lesson, she transforms science into magic, turning ordinary experiments into extraordinary adventures. Whether she’s summoning sparks with the Van de Graaff generator or challenging her students with egg drops and water rockets, her passion for teaching shines like a guiding light. Her whimsical character isn’t just for show, it deepens engagement and helps students connect more deeply with the material. With a remarkable gift for translating complex topics into relatable, memorable lessons, she inspires not just learning, but perseverance and purpose in every young scientist she teaches.

Tessa Pekrol, one of her past students reminisces on how Vernoldini’s lessons were, “fun ways to learn and her high energy made class easier and more fun to learn.”

This dedication is evident in the dynamic and engaging ways she presents material, even after years of teaching the same courses.

One memorable day, Mrs. Vernold had us form a circle and hold hands for a demonstration with the Van de Graaff generator. When she shocked one person, the sensation traveled through all of us, causing gasps and laughter. This  experience made the concept of electrical conductivity come alive.

Vernold's ability to turn complex ideas into fun moments sparked my interest in science. I realized science was all about exploration and discovery, and her enthusiasm inspired me to dive deeper into my understanding of the world.

Outside the classroom, Mrs. Vernold is a devoted mother, fully embracing her role as a caregiver and guide. The transition from teacher to mom is seamless for her, as she often reflects on her educational experiences to impart valuable lessons to her children.

"Mom mode is the most important mode I'm in,” she remarks, sharing how her kids inspire her daily with their boundless curiosity and joy for life.

She incorporates science into their lives, often testing her classroom demos with them before introducing them to her eager students. Through parenthood, her patience has flourished, allowing her to understand the complexities of each child's unique experiences and perspectives.

In her free time, Mrs. Vernold enjoys a rich tapestry of outdoor activities, from biking and swimming to nurturing her garden, where she challenges herself to plant something new and exciting each year. She finds joy in the simple moments, whether it's listening to upbeat 90s tunes or country melodies while driving, or escaping to her happy place in Lake George.

As she looks to the future, Mrs. Vernold is committed to enhancing her teaching skills and discovering innovative ways to connect with her students on a deeper level. She dreams of exploring national parks and camping under a blanket of stars, nurturing her love for the cosmos and the mysteries it holds.

“I just want to keep growing old with grace,” she says with a mindset focused on growth and resilience. She's always seeking new challenges and opportunities to learn and inspire.

In every aspect of her life, whether as a teacher, mother, or lifelong learner, Mrs. Vernold exemplifies the belief that with curiosity and determination, we can reach for the stars, shaping not only our own destinies but also those of the generations that follow.
