The CDC announced updated guidelines for wearing masks. Masks are now not needed if you're fully vaccinated and in an outside environment. Although it might be small, to some, this is a big step toward getting out of this pandemic.

This guideline does not apply to those who haven't been fully vaccinated. For those who haven't been vaccinated, it's best to wear a mask when having a small gathering outside unless all people have been tested.

The CDC is urging people to get vaccinated and the new guidelines give vaccinated individuals more opportunities. There is an ongoing message that start getting back to “normal” as more people are getting vaccinated.

“When I saw the announcement pop up on my phone I didn't really know how to feel. I see the progress we have all made and was happy with this announcement but just hope we keep moving in a positive direction” said Alyssa Molitor, a South Colonie High School student.

Getting the vaccine is much simpler now than it was a few months ago. You can find a place near you that is offering to give them, and then make an appointment. You are in and out within 30 minutes. Depending on which brand vaccine you receive you will go back and receive your second dose.

“At first I was nervous to receive the vaccine. I'll admit, but I know it's for the better good. If you look around you can see little changes that have been made since the vaccine has been released, for example the CDC announcement. Even little things like seeing more traffic,” Stephanie Cobart, a Colonie Resident, said.

Masks have been proven to help make a positive difference within this pandemic. According to the CDC, wearing one helps keep germs to oneself and not spread them to others while talking, coughing and sneezing. . Wearing a mask limits exposure from respiratory droplets that come from the mouth and nose.

At first many didn't want to receive the vaccine, but as time goes on, the number of people being fully vaccinated rises. There are now about 50.4% of the adult population who have at least gotten the first shot and about 32.5% of fully vaccinated adults in the US.

“It is nice to see the numbers of people getting vaccinated rise. To me it gives hope and continues the process we are making to get everyone healthier, ”Cobart commented.
